Welcome to the British Columbia Genealogical Society

We are a registered charitable organization with over 300 members from a variety of backgrounds and, like you, we all have an interest in researching our family history in British Columbia and beyond. We hope you will consider joining our Society.

The BCGS Library and Research Centre will be CLOSED from Sunday 22nd December through Monday 6th January 2025 〰️

The BCGS would like to acknowledge the ceded and unceded Indigenous ancestral territories of BC and Canada. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn the history, culture and traditions of the First Nations Peoples, alongside our personal investigations of familial settler history and encourage everyone to reflect on the Indigenous history of the lands where they reside.

BCGS Activities & Highlights

  • Genealogy - The Next Step

Genealogy - The Next Step - January 2025 (via Zoom)

When you have learned how to find birth, marriage, death, and census records, what’s the next step in your genealogy research-? This 5 week course will focus on in-depth research tips and techniques, particularly pre-civil registration dates. Whether you can spend 20 minutes a day, or hours and hours, you will learn more efficient and effective ways to research.
    Dates - Jan. 6, 13, 20, 27, Feb 3.
    Mondays - 7 to 9 pm.
Presented by Celia Lewis & Eunice Robinson.

The course includes Class outlines and handouts for each week.

Classes are FREE for BCGS members & Affiliate Society members, $40 for non-members.

  • Archives & Museums in BC

Archives and museums can be an invaluable source of information for your family research. Documents, photos, records and personal family collections that have been donated are just a few of the resources available to you.

The BCGS has a list of many of the archives and museums that can be found around the province. Each facility listed has a link to their website or for further information.

Consider visiting in person if the location is near enough to you or make time for a visit next time you plan a trip. Most can be contacted for information and assistance either by email, phone or mail.

  • BCGS Board of Directors Nominations

The March Members’ Meeting & AGM will be held on Zoom on Wednesday, 12 March 2025, at 7:30 pm. In addition to the regular meeting, elections will be held for a number of positions on the BCGS Board of Directors.

We are particularly looking for two people to stand as directors at large. Duties include attending the monthly Board meetings and taking on responsibility for one or more of our BCGS projects or programs.

We need proactive participation from more of our members, to provide guidance and leadership for the future endeavours of BCGS.
