BC West Coast Fishermen

1937 Beaver Cannery, Rivers Inlet, BC

The Pacific Ocean off the west coast of British Columbia has long been an abundant source of salmon and other sea life for the fishermen who ply the local waters. There were once dozens of fish canneries along the coast, providing a market for the catch. The Beaver Cannery in Rivers Inlet was one of those canneries. It opened its doors in 1905, one of more than a dozen canneries in Rivers Inlet.

This list documents the fisherman that sold their fish to the Beaver Cannery in 1937. The list was provided to the BC Genealogical Society by the BC Historical Federation. It had been included in a parcel of Beaver Cannery correspondence for the year 1937 donated to the BCHF by a woman who in 1972 had purchased the salvage rights to the old cannery.

The fishermen’s names are listed alphabetically and are followed by an initial that signifies their nationality. The BCGS does not know how the nationality was determined and we recognize that these categorizations are a product of their time and would not be used today. Nonetheless, they have been included here because they may provide useful information to researchers.
