The History of the Murchie Tea Company
Sharon McKenzie
Sharon McKenzie is proud of her Scottish Murchie heritage, celebrating generations of tea merchants and pioneers in British Columbia dating from the late 1800’s and Murchie marriage records in Scotland from 1777.
Sharon, daughter of Margaret Murchie of Vancouver, grew up in Calgary, often visiting her uncles and grandparents and working in the Murchie Tea stores during her university days. Her mother Margaret and a Murchie cousin found hundreds of old Murchie letters that gave insight into the Murchie’s life on the Isle of Arran, Scotland and early settlement in New Brunswick and British Columbia. Other research and some family records are in the Brodick, Isle of Arran and Vancouver Archives.
Sharon’s teaching career spans Australia, Northern Alberta and Calgary in various capacities including curriculum design, teaching, and administration before retiring to White Rock in 2013. She is pleased to share her Murchie story of the Murchie’s Tea Co journey with those interested in the early settlement of our great province and country.
